Pre-code American cinema

Early American sound cinema is a breath of fresh air compared to the stuffy and self-censoring Hollywood of later decades - that's the view of the organisers of a special retrospective at Vienna’s Film Museum that focuses on eight filmmakers who took advantage of the permissiveness and artistic freedom of the early 1930s. The retrospective is called Lubitsch, Sternberg and Co.

This programme was first broadcast on the 65th edition of The Cinema Show on Monocle 24
